Downsizing Before a Move
DOWNSIZING TIPS
Downsizing Before a Move is a critical part of Moving Preparations. It is about getting rid of the things you don’t need without losing sight of which possessions do bring you joy.
You probably don’t need all of the possessions that you have. You probably don’t use quite a bit of the stuff that you own. How do you decide what to get rid of? These questions may seem hard to answer, but we can help. Follow each of the steps below to make the best downsizing decisions based on your specific needs.
GO THROUGH EVERYTHING ONE ROOM AT A TIME:
If you start trying to downsize your whole home at once, you will get overwhelmed. Instead, concentrate on one room at a time. Don’t move on until you have gone through every cabinet, shelf, and closet in that room.
As you work your way through the room carefully consider each possession and ask yourself the following questions for each item.
The additional charge for this coverage must be provided in your mover’s estimate.
Under this option, movers are permitted to limit their liability for loss or damage to articles of extraordinary value, unless you specifically list these articles on the shipping documents. An article of extraordinary value is any item whose value exceeds $100.00 per pound. Ask your mover for a complete explanation of this limitation before your move. It is your responsibility to study this provision carefully and to make the necessary declaration,
DOES THIS ITEM MAKE ME HAPPY?
Sometimes we keep items even if they are not useful just because they bring us joy. That is OK. You do not need to get rid of every item in your home that is not useful. Instead when downsizing is honest with yourself about how your things make you feel.
WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME I USED IT?
If you are having trouble getting rid of things, try asking yourself why. Facing the facts of why we hold onto things we don’t need can help us learn to let go.
If you are keeping an item other than for use or joy, let it go.
CONSIDER THE SPACE IN YOUR NEW HOME
You need to make sure that you actually have space in your new home for everything that you want to bring with you. Try to think of where you will end up keeping everything specifically. If you can’t think of a place get rid of it. Why waste money and energy moving items that you ultimately won’t be able to use.
IF YOU DON’T USE THE ITEM OR IT DOES NOT BRING YOU JOY GO AHEAD AND GET RID OF IT.
