There are two types of estimates your moving professional can provide.
This posting is to explain the different options for your estimate.
BINDING ESTIMATES: A binding estimate gives you the guarantee that you cannot be required to pay additional to the amount on the estimate based on items on survey and services agreed upon.
However, if you do add additional items or services after the estimate you may be responsible for additional charges.
If there are unforeseen circumstances at the destination such as elevators, stairs, long carries or shuttle service that was not known at the time of the estimate, there may be additional charges incurred.
NON BINDING ESTIMATES: A non-binding estimate is intended to provide you with an estimated cost of your move. A non-binding estimate is not a guarantee of your final moving costs. The estimate should be reasonably accurate. The estimate must indicate that the final charges for your move will be based on the actual weight of your shipment and the services provided. Therefore the amount of the non-binding estimate may differ from the amount you eventually pay for your relocation.
A non-binding estimate must be in writing and clearly describe the shipment and all services provided. Under a non-binding estimate the mover cannot require you to pay more than 110 percent of the original estimate at the time of delivery. This is known as the “110 Percent Rule” This does not excuse you from paying all the charges due but you will have 30 days to pay the remaining balance due.
Your mover must give you possession of your shipment if you pay 110 percent of a non-binding estimate or 100 percent of a binding estimate. If your mover does not relinquish possession, the mover is holding your shipment hostage in violation of federal law.
When receiving an estimate it is very important to be as accurate as possible on what items are going to be moved. You also need to make your relocation professional aware of any additional services such as packing, storage or auto shipment that you may require. As long as these requirements are met you should be given an accurate estimate for your upcoming relocation.
