8 Important Tips to Know Before Moving

Helpful Packing Tips

Organization is Key

If you are planning a move from one home to another, you need to make sure you are prepared for the often stressful process. Many people have had bad experiences moving, but if you take these steps and plan ahead, you can have a smooth, worry-free move.

Set Up Internet

These days, it can be very difficult to live without internet in your home. Many of the tasks that we do on a daily basis require the internet. About 3 weeks before the move, you should contact a local internet service provider and book an appointment. Sometimes, those appointments can take weeks to schedule, so get a head start and ensure that you can have your internet set up within a few days of moving in.

Update Your Address

One of the first things you should do is get your address changed. Notify the post office immediately and contact any business or government organizations (bank, magazine subscriptions, insurance companies, etc.) that need your home information.

Connect Energy to Your Home

Just before you move, call your energy provider and make sure they are aware of the address change. You want to make sure you aren’t billed for the previous tenant’s energy usage and vice versa.

Change Locks on Exterior Doors

When you move in, something that often gets overlooked is changing the locks. You never know who may have keys to your place, so don’t take the chance. Either buy new lock sets or have a locksmith come out to your place and change them out.

Inspect Your House

Chances are when you visited your new home you got to do some basic examination of the property, but you didn’t get to thoroughly inspect the entire house. There can be water damage, structural weaknesses, stains, and other problems that arise after the move that can cause you headaches. Don’t assume the inspectors addressed everything when they looked at the house. Make sure to fix these problems before they become worse.

Clean House

After inspection, clean every room in the house if you can or have it professionally done. Bacteria and mold can build up in your home over time, so a true deep-cleaning is important when you’re starting out.

Make a Checklist

Keeping track of everything you need to do when you’re moving can be difficult. You should make a checklist that details all the important tasks and items you need for the move. This will keep you organized during this hectic time. When you finally check that last mark off on your list, you are officially settled into the new house!

Hire Professional Movers

Moving is a stressful time for many people. If you are doing it by yourself, the move is hard work that includes lots of heavy lifting, packing, loading, and driving. Hiring a professional moving company can make the process much easier on people.
